Topic: Untargeted Metabolomics: A Unique Biochemical Approach for Understanding Disease Pathogenesis

Abstract

Untargeted metabolomics measures small molecular metabolites at a systems biology level. The success of metabolomics has relied largely on advances in mass spectrometry (MS). The successful integration of MS techniques with bioinformatic tools enables to comprehensively compare the intensities of thousands of metabolite peaks in one sample group to those in another in an untargeted manner. In addition, we demonstrate that matching high resolution precursor ion (MS) and tandem mass spectral (MS/MS) data to the metabolite spectral database provides a more convincing identification than accurate mass alone. This approach, called untargeted metabolomics, integrating mass spectrometry analysis, bioinformatics software for mass spectrometry data processing and the database facilitated identification, has the potential to implicate unexpected pathways with a unique phenotype or disease process. Although relatively new compared with its genomic and proteomic predecessors, research in the field of metabolomics has already led to the discovery of biomarkers for disease, fundamental insights into cellular biochemistry and clues related to disease pathogenesis. In this talk, the application of metabolomics in understanding disease pathogenesis will also be introduced.
